Albert’s Story

Albert’s Story

Albert Mata is running to be the next Dallas City Council Member to represent District 1. His family has lived in Oak Cliff since the 1970’s, and is a third generation Oak Cliff resident. He likes to say “he was born on the banks of the Arkikosa River (Trinity)”. Albert is passionate about Oak Cliff.

Education2023-01-19T00:57:48-06:00

He graduated from Molina High School in 2012, where he was in the top 2% of his class and then attended the University of Texas at Austin as a Terry Scholar. At UT Austin he served on the board of the Hispanic Business Student Association; and graduated in 2016 with a BBA in Finance.

Career2023-01-13T00:56:14-06:00

He previously worked for Accenture, a leading technology consulting company, and has since moved to work at other similar firms. Albert has consulted on a dozen projects with nine different organizations. In these roles, he leveraged skills such as effective listening, solutions design, and data management.

Community Work2023-01-10T06:13:30-06:00

Albert has also been an active community volunteer at his alma mater, Molina High School, and also with Somos Tejas, and the West Oak Cliff Coalition, among others. He is deeply committed to community engagement and development; especially neighborhood engagement and has volunteered on local and regional campaigns. He spent the last 2+ years serving on the board of Somos Tejas and is proud of the work they have accomplished including being among the first, in June of 2020, to implement door-to-door efforts in Dallas to provide COVID-19 education as well as outreach to ensure that residents in the community completed the Census. Finally, he is inspired by the results of his work with the West Oak Cliff Coalition to ensure that land use planning in West Oak Cliff was accomplished with increased community participation and through a lens of equity. That work resulted in the formation of the Automotive Association of Oak Cliff, and he is honored to continue supporting this group to advocate for locally owned small businesses while addressing zoning and development pressures that put them at risk. He knows that there are many more areas in District 1 that deserve this level of engagement, which leads to increased civic participation and more equitable outcomes for everyone.

Albert knows that authentically engaging as many of District 1’s residents in issues like neighborhood development, infrastructure spending, and voting is the way to ensure a better Oak Cliff for all of us. Albert aspires for a more active and representative form of democracy where the will of the whole of Oak Cliff is accurately and truly represented. He looks forward to bringing his unique perspective, passion, and determination, if elected as the City Council Member for District 1 in the upcoming May 2023 election.

Priorities

Priorities

Representation for All of Oak Cliff

Our community faces many issues but none of those are being resolved because we don’t have true representation for all of Oak Cliff.

My Commitments2023-01-19T00:47:50-06:00
  • Listen to and honor the concerns of all my constituents, regardless of where they live. I will work to understand the lives and experiences of our diverse community members.
  • Routinely host “Connect with Your Council Member” pop-up events throughout the community in places such as but not limited to: laundromats, grocery stores, schools, libraries, gas stations, parks, and DART stations.
  • Host more than a couple of District 1 town halls. The town halls will be live streamed on social media in order to give people the option to tune in virtually or watch later.
  • Our community deserves to have information accessible to them. I will have bilingual outreach and information from day one. This means newsletters and social media posts as well as weekly videos informing you about relevant District 1 and citywide updates will always be in English and Spanish.
  • I will be available to the community outside usual work hours because I understand that not everyone has a flexible schedule.
Community Driven Development

Our community has suffered from chronic under-investment from both the public and private sectors. There is no reason why the roads and parks on opposite sides of the same district should look drastically different. Regardless of the reasons those differences came about, I will work on reversing those disparities by focusing on equitable investments into our ENTIRE community.

My Commitments2023-01-19T00:47:00-06:00
  • Push for public sector over-investment to correct historical neglect.
  • Work to make developers accountable to our community, we are their stakeholders. I will require developers to meet with the community first when proposing a project that requires a zoning change or a city subsidy.
  • Prioritize improving and expanding our green spaces such as Westmoreland Park, Hampton pocket park, and the Chalk Hill Trail.
  • Protecting our communities from predatory real estate practices
Stronger Neighborhoods

The people of Oak Cliff are our greatest strength, but to reach our full potential requires us to have stronger neighborhoods. Strong neighborhoods mean: people are active participants in determining their own destiny (self-determination), they have sufficient and effective city services and where neighbors feel safe.

My Commitments2023-01-19T00:46:23-06:00
  • Work to improve first responder response time, and overall performance of city services.
  • As your council member I will continue to support community based associations (e.g. neighborhood associations, merchant associations)
  • In addition to attending neighborhood meetings, I am committed to being boots on the ground to increase resident engagement.
  • Host dozens of community and neighborhood meetings (topics and neighborhoods).
